Life and work around the year -
people in Ludwigshafen

Two classes, 9 a and 7 b, took part in the project in 1998/99. They have worked producing posters, reports and sketches. Out of this work w've chosen two sketches which are connected with the history and the changes in Ludwigshafen.

Time to say goodbye

written by Annika Schraml, Jasmin Flaxmeier, Katharina Schubert und Melanie Raufer.

Area: Office in Ludwigshafen
People: Secretary, boss, builder, assistant
Properties: Office furniture, helmet, overalls, office clothes

(The boss is sitting on his chair and the loudspeaker is on.)

Boss: Yes? What´s the matter?

Secretary: The builders are here. They want to speak to you, boss.

Boss: It´s all right. Thanks. (Two men in overalls come into the room.)

Builder: Good afternoon.

Boss: Good afternoon, can I help you?

Builder: Of course. We want to talk to you about the „Walzmühle".

Boss: Aha, sit down, please!

Builder: Thank you. May I introduce my mate Werner Soßenberger.

Boss: Pleased to meet you! (They shake hands.)

Assistant: Pleased to meet you , too.

Boss: Now let´s talk about the „Walzmühle".

Builder: The „Walzmühle" is a historical monument of Ludwigshafen. We think we must restore it.

Boss: Have you got an idea? (The secretary comes in.)

Secretary: Mr Jansen has phoned, boss. He wants to meet you at the Ramada Hotel tomorrow.

Boss: It´s all right. (The secretary leaves.)

Assistant: We think about a shopping centre in the „Walzmühle".

Builder: Yes, it should become the biggest one in Ludwigshafen.

Boss: Sounds good, but how much?

Builder: Let´s wait and see. (The secretary comes in again and shows him a paper.)

Secretary: Must I write these lines on the computer?

Boss: What a silly question. Do you want to play them on the piano?
( A few minutes later the secretary goes out and the boss listens again to the two men)

Boss: Where did we stop?

Assistant: We talked about the money.

Builder: Everybody talks about money. 5 or 6 million DM is a good price.

Boss: No comment. And the name?

Builder: We think about „Walzrheincentre".

Assistant: Or „Uferzentrum". ( Somebody is knocking at the door. It´s the secretary again.)

Secretary: Boss, have you read the text from Dr Pedredin?

Boss: No! Don´t disturb me with your silly questions.

Assistant: Sorry , but can you tell me where the toilet is?

Boss: Yes, we don´t want this chair to become wet. Ha, ha, ha. It´s the next door on the left.

Assistant.: Thanks a lot. ( The assistant stands up and runs to the toilet.)

Builder: It´s better to wait till he comes back.
( The assistant looks through the door.He looks quite nervous. )

Assistant: Can you tell me the way to the toilet once again?

Boss: My secretary can help you. Hopefully.

( The door closes. A few minutes later the assistant comes in. His trousers seem to be terribly wet.)

Assistant: Your stupid secretary had a very long phone call. ( He points to his trousers.)

Assistant: It´s time to say goodbye. See next week.

The fight for gold

written by Christina Nimac and Mumine Arslan.

People: Sabine Keller (daughter), Gertrud Keller (mother) Properties:Two chairs, table, books,
( The Keller family is at home. They are in the living-room. Sabine comes angrily into the living-room. Her mother is sitting on the coach and she is reading a book. Sabine throws her schoolbooks on the table. Her mother closes her book and looks angrily at her.)

Mother: Please, don´t treat your books so badly. You know that they were very expensive. If you treat them that way you can buy them by yourself the next time.

Sabine: Sorry mum. I´ve got problems at school. You know I´m not good at history and now I have to write a historical story about Ludwigshafen. I don´t know what to do.

Mother: Don´t panic. You have to work hard to get a good mark, you know that. But maybe I can help you, if you want. (Sabine goes to the cupboard and she comes back with a sheet of paper and a pencil. Then she sits next to her mum.)

Sabine: Let´s start. Mother: Let me think. ( After some time she starts telling.)

Mother: Back in those days when I was a child my grandmother always told me stories about Ludwigshafen. There is one I can remember.

Sabine: And which one? Mother: The fight for gold.

Sabine: Tell me, mum. Mother: OK. It was about 3 years after the World War II. A fisherman caught some fish in the Rhein. One day he caught a big fish. When he looked at the fish he saw gold dust on it. He ran into town and told it to everybody he saw.

Sabine: What a silly man. Mother: That´s the way he was.

Sabine: And what happened next?

Mother: Be patient. I´ll tell you: Of course all the fishermen wanted to have the gold now. They built a gold factory in Ludwigshafen, but the fishermen from Mannheim destroyed the building.

Sabine: Why did they destroy it?

Mother: Because they wanted the gold for themselves. They left a message which said: „The gold is ours!“ Nevertheless the fishermen from Ludwigshafen began to build a new factory. Then they put a net through the middle of the Rhein.

Sabine: How did the „Mannheimer“ react then?

Mother: They destroyed the net and destroyed the factory again. They once again left a message which said: „ The gold is ours, we are fed up.Prepare for a fight.“

Sabine: What happened then?

Mother: Of course they prepared for that fight. The fight lasted a few months.

Sabine: Who was the winner? Mother: Of course the fishermen from Ludwigshafen. They built a new and a better factory and they put a new net through the middle of the Rhein. So the gold was theirs and they became very rich.

Sabine: Is that true? Mother: Of course, I would never tell you any lies. (The mother smiles meaningfully. Four days later. Sabine enters happily the living-room.)

Mother: And, how was it?

Sabine: It was great. I got the best mark: a one and the story was the best one in the whole class. Our history teacher said that he wants to talk to you. He must know some more details about this forgotten legend.

Mother: Oh, no!

Sabine: Why ,no?

Mother: I´m very sorry , Sabine, but I invented that story.

Sabine: Mum!!!!!
